Cory Jackson, of Eagle River, Alaska, washes a sockeye salmon in the Kenai River after catching it with a dipnet. Sockeye salmon are commonly called red salmon in Alaska. While it is possible to take a chinook (or king) salmon with a dipnet, and every other year a strong return of pink salmon show up, reds are the fish Alaskans flock to catch in the river's mouth in Kenai, Alaska.
